ABOUT ME

Kathryn Graddy holds the Fred and Rita Richman Distinguished Professorship in Economics at Brandeis University. Her research primarily explores the economics of art and culture, as well as industrial organization. She has an extensive publication record in the economics of the arts, with articles featured in prestigious international journals such as the American Economic Review, the Review of Economic Studies, Management Science, the Journal of Economic Literature, the Rand Journal of Economics, and the Journal of Economic History. A primary focus of many of these paper is the pricing of art and art auctions. Additionally, she has authored policy papers on Artist Resale Rights for the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the UK Patent Office. Kathryn is a former Editor of the Journal of Cultural Economics and has conducted a series of studies on the Fulton fish market, with findings published in the Review of Economic Studies, the Journal of Economic Policy, and the Rand Journal, among others. In 2018, she was honored with an honorary doctorate from Copenhagen Business School.

TEACHING and ADMINISTRATION

She has taught Game Theory and Industrial Organization to advanced undergraduates, advanced microeconomics to PhD students, and has co-taught a course on the Economics of the Arts. She enjoys advising Ph.D. students and undergraduates on their theses. From 2018 through 2025 she served as the Dean of the Brandeis International Business School. Kathryn served as Senior Associate Dean of the Brandeis International Business School from 2016-2018, Director of the PhD program at Brandeis International Business School from 2015-2016, and Chair of the Economics Department at Brandeis from 2011-2014.

CONSULTING

She has consulted on the intellectual property of art for various governmental organizations and has acted as an expert witness on cases regarding the pricing of art.  

FURTHER BACKGROUND

Kathryn came to Brandeis in 2007 from Oxford University, where she was a Fellow of Exeter College. Prior to Oxford, she was Assistant Professor of Economics at the London Business School and a Junior Research Fellow at Jesus College, Oxford. She received her PhD in Economics from Princeton University, her MBA from Columbia University, and her BS and BA in Mathematics and Russian from Tulane University.
